Reading and comprehension quizzes

Reading and comprehension quizzes run directly in your browser. The application does not send your reading position, reading speed, quiz answers or results to the site operator. The book and questions are provided with the website; no external reading or quiz service is used.

Local browser storage

The application uses your browser’s local storage to remember your reading speed, theme, last selected section, reading position in each section, and answers from completed comprehension quizzes. It also remembers which encouragement messages have been shown to avoid repeating them too soon. These values stay in your browser and are not sent to the site operator.

The application does not set an expiry date for this saved data. Your activity updates the stored values. Use Reset settings to restore the default speed and theme, or Reset progress to clear reading and comprehension progress, reset the encouragement history, and return to the first section. To remove all stored values, clear this website’s data in your browser settings. Using the reader again will save new data.

Hosting and access logs

The website is hosted on a server managed by the site operator at netcup GmbH, Emmy-Noether-Straße 10, 76131 Karlsruhe, Germany. When you access the website online, the connection and request data needed to serve it are transmitted to this server. This includes your IP address, the time and target of the request, HTTP status, the amount of data transferred, and browser information and, where provided, the referring page (referrer). As the hosting provider, netcup receives the data needed to provide the website.

The site operator has entered into a Data Processing Agreement with netcup GmbH for the processing of personal data on the site operator’s behalf in connection with hosting this website.

The nginx access logs on the site operator’s server are retained for 14 days and then deleted. They are used to maintain security, diagnose errors and detect misuse. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR; the legitimate interest is in providing a reliable and secure website. Online access is not possible without the necessary connection data.

This retention period applies to the access logs managed by the site operator. According to netcup, retention periods for additional technical logs held by the provider depend on the product and legal requirements. netcup specifies a maximum of 14 days for logs collected to defend against attacks; this does not establish a general retention period for all data processed by the provider. For details, see netcup’s log storage policy and privacy policy.

Cookies and visitor statistics

The application does not set cookies or include visitor analytics or advertising scripts. It uses the local browser storage described above to remember your preferences and progress.

Contacting us

If you contact us by email or phone, the contact details and information you provide are used to handle your enquiry. For email, the service providers used to send and receive messages are involved in transmission and storage. This information is deleted once your enquiry has been fully resolved and there are no statutory retention requirements or legitimate grounds for keeping it longer.

The legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR; the legitimate interest is in responding to your enquiry. For enquiries concerning entering into or performing a contract, the legal basis is Article 6(1)(b) GDPR. You decide whether to contact us and what information to provide; without the necessary contact details and information about your enquiry, we may be unable to respond.

Your rights

Where the applicable legal conditions are met, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) gives you the rights of access (Article 15), rectification (Article 16), erasure (Article 17), restriction of processing (Article 18) and data portability (Article 20). You may withdraw any consent you have given at any time, without affecting the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal (Article 7(3)).

Where processing is based on Article 6(1)(f) GDPR, you may object on grounds relating to your particular situation (Article 21 GDPR). To do so, use the contact details above. The site operator has no access to reading and quiz data stored solely in your browser; you can delete it yourself as described above.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Article 77 GDPR), particularly in the country of your habitual residence, place of work or the alleged infringement. The authority responsible for the site operator in Lower Saxony, Germany, is the State Commissioner for Data Protection of Lower Saxony (complaint form in German).

No automated decision-making, including profiling, that produces legal or similarly significant effects takes place.
